We are hosting an event as part of the Off The Shelf literary festival to open our weekend of events.
Juliet Jacques (from ‘My Transgender Journey‘ as featured in The Guardian), will be giving a talk on media representations of trans people. There will be time for question and answers and Juliet will be sticking around afterwards too.
Juliet Jacques is a freelance journalist who writes for The Guardian, The New Statesman, TimeOut and elsewhere. She is best known for her Transgender Journey series for The Guardian, documenting the NHS gender reassignment process, which was longlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2011. Here, she will discuss how she saw liberal and conservative media attack trans people during the Nineties and Noughties, and why she felt compelled to merge underground theory, radical politics and personal anecdote in writing for a mainstream publication.
Later on there will be music and drinks in the form of a LaDIYfest Sheffield opening party to ease you into the weekend.
We are also going to have a CD mix swap – so get thinking about putting something together and make sure to bring it along with you on the night to exchange for a mix someone else made!
